Smoke alarm chirping or false alarms

Low battery, end of life, finding which alarm, and false alarms from steam, dust or bugs.

How it works

A single chirp every minute or so is a smoke alarm asking for attention, most often a low battery. Hardwired alarms run on 120 V but still have a backup battery, and sealed 10-year alarms chirp when they reach end of life. Every smoke alarm wears out: replace it 10 years after the date of manufacture printed on the back. False alarms usually come from steam, cooking, dust or insects in the sensing chamber, or an alarm that’s simply too old.
